Per haps 'transparent' is the wrong word to use? 'Minimalist' might have been better. I meant writing which doesn't put the writer's personality, or anything else, between the reader and the thing described. The clearest words (which are generally the simplest), and smoothest grammar.
I'm sorry you had such bad luck with English teachers. Mine were pretty good. No worse about hearing themselves talk than others, and loved literature, including the grammar part.
